EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN
The Boden Donut Rocker was designed in collaboration with Jason Beshore, Health Principal at HDR Architecture .
As part of his work designing behavioral health spaces, he noticed that patients calmed themselves by rocking back and forth on the floor instead of using rocking chairs that were accessible to them. After talking to caregivers and conducting research to learn more, Jason presented us with a concept.
Our product design team set out to bring this concept to life, creating a prototype that was tested in a live environment.
TACTILE, PROPRIOCEPTIVE AND VESTIBULAR ENTRANCE
The rocker is designed to provide gentle, controllable vestibular stimulation that helps to comfort and calm those in crisis.
The shape, size, and softness of the product also offer tactile (touch) and proprioceptive (sense of body positioning) inputs, which provide a supportive feeling of reassuring wrap-around contact.
RECYCLING
We fill our beanbags with the foam left over from making our sofas and chairs. By doing so, we help reduce our CO2 footprint and improve durability:
- By switching from polystyrene, CO2 emissions were reduced by 53%
- By reusing material that would otherwise be discarded, we reduce waste
- Unlike other fillings that deform over time, there is no requirement to refill the filling
